Why is a Guardian ad Litem Important?
A Guardian ad Litem is a volunteer court appointed special advocate for abused, abandoned and neglected children. There are currently over 3,000 children in our community of Pinellas and Pasco County that have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Approximately 2,000 of those children are represented by the Guardian ad Litem Program and of those about 51% have a dedicated Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Close to 1,000 children don’t have a Guardian ad Litem. A Guardian ad Litem is important. Studies have shown that children with a Guardian at Litem are:
Moved less times while in the foster care system
Spend less time in out of home care
More likely to be adopted
Have lower court continuances
Provided more services to assist with their healing process
These factors can make a huge difference in
the life of a child healing from abuse.
